catching up

We are doing the catching up as far as homeschooling goes. Cuz the kids were sick and F had another stomach thing.. only for 1 night... but still enough to keep us from really doing much of school work for at least 1 week..
Now we are back to the writing program, readings, math daily, out door activities... etc
I am reading Native American stories to them and they really enjoy the short stories, as well as The legend of Sleepy Hollow with F. I figure since it is November we will do a lot of Native Am. stories as well as some lesson plans geared toward this subject for the whole month and then visit the Native Am. museum in NYC again to see how much we have learned....
We are also back to reading from The story of US for US history lessons which all 3 take part in, the girls also get a geography lesson as well thru this as we use our big wall map to show them the places we are reading about.
For science we are reading about honey bees and various animals, doing very simple experiments and lots of walks and discussions about our planet. We also met up with some homeschooling families last Thursday, played soccer, dug in the dirt and hung out for a few hours, then me and the kids decided we should walk around in Prospect park and possibly go to the PP zoo again. So we walked and talked about the park, the birds, the trees and how beautiful it all looks in the Fall. F found some unusual mushrooms and collected some leaves. The zoo was nice, we got there just as some school groups were leaving, and walked around for abt 2 hours. The baboons were especially fun this time around.... I took the soccer ball to the park and so after the zoo we walked to the grassy area next to the zoo and played some soccer. Just me and the kids...
it was a nice day, DH came to pick us up after work so we didn't need to bus it home. I have to say I really enjoy spending all day (from 10 am to 4 pm) outside with the kids just letting the day take us where it does. No schedules, no homework, no worrying about getting anything done for school.. just deciding for ourselves what we will be doing....

I will add more updates to this blog soon, I'd also like to do more of home schooling reviews about products we are using.. but we shall see how that works out....
