I took the kids to the fort Hamilton defense museum on Friday with the home school group. It was a quick 20 min bus ride and 2 block walk... I can't believe we had never been there. It was on the army base, the kids got to see soldiers with the guns patrolling the place....
The class was so great I was so glad we decided to go, it was supposed to rain but never did but it was windy...
The tour guide was a WWII veteran and loved the fact that we were home schoolers... he felt so much more at ease and him and a few other volunteers commented more than once abt what a difference it was between our group of 4 to 10 yo's and the public school's 4Th grade class that was there 3 days before. The home schooled kids were better behaved and listened and enjoyed his talks...didn't run around screaming and jumping... we felt so proud lol
He told them all about the Battle of Brooklyn and the Revolutionary war as well as some facts abt. Brooklyn. He also talked a bit about the Fort we were standing in. Built in the 1800's, it was so cool to be inside....We got to see real cannons, various bullets from the Rev. war to WWII. Some weighed from 32 lbs to 3000... jeez...
We also got a demonstration on how to shoot a musket, and were shown a short video. then we took a walk on the bluff of the fort and he told us how in the exact spot we were standing on over looking the Narrows river and the Verrazano bridge, the battle of Brooklyn was taking place over 200 yrs ago. The kids stood there listening, with the wind whipping them in the face and asked questions and just took in the information. The whole tour, class etc was supposed to be about 1 hr and 15 min long.. we got there at 11 am and left at 2 pm :). F hung out with his friend A and J met a girl from NJ who she talked to a little bit.
My DH left work a little early and picked us up, dropped off A and his mom at the train station and then came home and ate Thanksgiving leftovers... roasted vegetables, stuffing and stuffed potatoes.. :) soo good....
Spent the weekend cleaning up and relaxing.. for some reason my house looked like Thanksgiving blew up lol. It's all better now...
Schooling can start tomorrow again....
