We got home from the big 'end of no school celebration' get together in LI today. The kids had a great time playing with their friends and meeting new friends, J met a new friend S and played with her friend C and J all day in the big park. They ran around, climbed trees, played catch, tag etc etc. It was such a nice day, the moms hung out and talked, even some dads went. Around 1:30 pm they handed out the certificates for 'graduating' the respective grades that the kids are in. It was nice, F got to hear his name be called, the certificate is so beautiful.
He had such a great time and all the kids played so well together, using team work when needing to. (there were about 45 kids there, and at least 20 different families)
One of the moms set up a table for all of the books and study materials she no longer wanted (free for all) and we ended up getting about 4 books and teaching clock for J.
I feel so comfortable being around these women and so good about our decision to home school our kids. When I see how well my kids are interacting and how easy it is for them to make friends it makes me feel good.
We have been doing a lot of stuff this week, F has been learning about tornadoes, we read a few books on the topic, looked up some web sites and made a water tornado from 2 soda bottles filled with water. They love it :) it's so easy to make.
We are still reading about ancient Rome, F has been writing in his notebook passages from the books we are reading to practice his penmanship.
The other day I asked him to pick one of his workbooks and do a page, so he did about 12 math pages, mostly brush ups from the year, but it was his choice so it was not a problem for him to do so much.
We are also reviewing his multiple digit addition and subtraction, as well as his 2 times tables.
We worked on decimal points and the correct way to add using them. I also showed him how to fill out a deposit slip for the bank. I figure it's never too early for him to learn.
Thursday we went to visit a home school friend for a little bit and then off to the library to play chess, J is getting to be an old pro at the library computer, and F loves to play chess.
I will upload the pics from today and hopefully put them on the site:) if I ever get around to it.
