Independence day

Well we never made it to the library, instead we went to my mother's house in S.I. the kids really wanted to go and spend time with their grandma so we stayed for 2 days.
F played with his Legos and with a cool new comp. game called Fate, he and J really enjoyed themselves with it. I was impressed at how they played together for a while...the kids played a little bit of their version of soccer, they kicked the ball all around her side yard.
The 4Th we stayed inside and watched the fireworks on TV, but heard them all around the neighborhood.
It always amazes me how little people actually know about the United States, when some people were asked the question of why we celebrate July 4Th not all knew the answer. I'm like, OK my 7 yr old knows!
My DH had a conversation with someone from his job that pretty much centered on why we home school and how it's not good for the kids because of the lack of socialization and how we are not letting him experience all that school has to offer. I didn't know if I should laugh or cry at how some people perceive school...then the question that got me angry came up..he asked why makes my DH think he is qualified to teach his kids... we are their parents! I really hate that people automatically think that some higher power( a teacher) is better qualified to teach or take care etc.. of our kids than we are...albeit some parents really should just send their kids to school....but not all of us!
My husbands' reply was just a simple..and I'm still going to home school them :)
A lot of people don't realize what it actually takes to home school your kids, a lot of time, patience and resources...which can come from various sources...buying books, workbooks, library, Internet, classes, workshops......
As far as the socialization issues goes(which seems to be most peoples concern, not so much the education) if you so choose to keep your kid isolated then they will be. Most parents are involved with home school groups, the kids are enrolled in various sports, classes or activities with other children..... there are weekly, or monthly get togethers with other home schoolers, sleep overs.. I could go on and on...
Sometimes I just wish that people would just mind their own business.....if it's not right for you then don't do it but leave me alone with my choices...
Obviously home schooling works for us so we will keep doing it until it doesn't feel right any more (hopefully until high school is over).
