We are gearing up for our second year home schooling..this year J will be home schooled as well, only for pre-K. I am already feeling a little overwhelmed with the activities that are coming up for us, both in LI and in Brooklyn. But it's so great to be with friends and to do so many interesting things. I need to do our finances and see what we can sign up for and what we will have to pass on....we have so many new books and a few more coming so we are pretty set for 2ND grade:)
Today we were at the Queens Hall of Science with another HS mom and her 3 kids..one of whom is F's good friend. We had a great time, we've never been there and it was so much fun for all of us. It really takes more than 1 day to completely see and do everything in there. We saw a cow's eye being dissected, it was gross but so cool.....ran around in a giant maze which J loved, played with giant bubbles...it was a great place that Incorporated Science and makes it really fun. The only draw back was that there were about 5 other school/camp groups there as well and it hampered some of the time we spent. We need to go back another day when it's hopefully only regular ppl. visiting.
F has been reading his Kid's world almanac a lot the past few weeks, looking for countries where they use the US dollar as currency and doing a lot of math, getting better and better, and reading a lot of different children's poetry. F and J have a favorite poem written by Shel Silverstein.
We finally finished the Revolutionary War part of our history, I read the battle of Brooklyn and he reenacted the battle with his revolutionary war soldiers. He loves his soldiers, he has about 4 different types. He loves to watch documentaries about planes, war and weather type of weather. We have been looking at all types of extreme weather and the causes of it. I don't know how we would live with out the Internet.
A few days ago we had an F2 tornado hit our area in Brooklyn, which has not happened in 100 years..it was at the same time cool and scary. We went out to look at the damage and realized that it passed about 7 blocks from our apt.
They started cleaning up immediately but we saw trees uprooted, and some houses slightly damaged. It was weird seeing it here so close....
I'm just glad that everything is fine here.
