Lefferts House

We went to the Leffterts Homestead house in Prospect Park with another hs'ing mom and her child. The boys had a good time pretending to be colonial children and learning some interesting things about the time period. F got to try and lay down on a bed made of rope and a straw mattress, play some colonial games which included checkers, and try a water pump. It was really interesting to learn about the oldest house in Bklyn. It was built right at the end of the Revolutionary war in 1783, and the family lived there until 1913.
The boys also got to play inside a Lenape Indian house made of straw and other materials.
The whole thing was free and it actually is very convenient from our house by bus which is great. Afterwards we went on the carousel ride, I have not seen F's face light up like it did when he was on the ride in a long time..I almost forgot he is 7.... then the boys played hide and seek in the park, found some wild oranges which they broke open and investigated the insides, and generally had a good time playing together.
The Prospect Park zoo's back entrance is right by the House which I did not know until yesterday so this means that I can take the kids to the zoo more often because there is almost no walking distance from the bus...only 1 block...I was so glad because we are going soon, just the 4 of us......
F got his Civil war soldiers that we ordered a few days ago and played with them all night until bed time...he has about 200 soldiers all from various wars....he loves the stuff and he is more willing to learn about the battles when he can play them out with his own soldiers, this one came with 2 generals, and 22 soldiers from each side, horses, cannons and some other accessories all for $5 plus shipping.....
J went to her dance class yesterday and she is back to the way she was with her dancing..she loves this class, she gets to do creative things and learn some ballet techniques as well but there is no pressure to get the moves right..she gets to learn at her own pace with the right encouragement.
I love home schooling....it's so freeing to be able to be with the kids every day and know what they are doing and not doing.....
