I am re thinking the way we home school, I think it'd be more beneficial for us all if we followed a little more of the unschooling way to home schooling for a few months to see how well it works for us. Or maybe it's just the holidays are coming up and I know we will not do as much sit down work as I'd like for the next month or so....
We are doing pretty well though in all areas, J is eagerly learning how to read and write and draws a LOT :), and F is doing well with all his subjects, the writing program was give a little rest this week and will start up again soon. We had a wonderful breakthrough (on my part) with a math subject that I struggled with for most of my schooling. For some reason no one really bothered to sit down and teach me the formulas for figuring out fractions... ex:, what is 4/5Th's of 75? I look back at my school years and it makes me so sad that it is such an easy explanation but no one really tried to explain it, I guess they all thought I should have learned it back in the 4Th grade... it makes me feel good beyond words that my children do not have to deal with that ever! I sat down with F and we went over the formula and some examples together and he is getting the hang of it. I really am seeing how home schooling my children is so much more beneficial for them than sending them to school would be. In part because of the stories that I am hearing from some of my friends who used to home school and now send their children to school, as well as ppl who have never even considered home schooling and never will but tell me stories about their children's experiences. When I see my kids playing soccer in the park on a Tuesday afternoon, after a trip to the library where they got to borrow a book of their choosing, when F is so eager to read a chapter in his new book that he doesn't want to go home because it's nice in the park under a tree, I am content that this is what we are meant to be doing. When J earnestly tells me that she didn't know the Earth was made up of lava and only rocks before the moon came, and then tells me so eagerly as we are walking home from an errand, how the moon affects the waters and how different the Earth would be if the moon was not there. I see how they learn from so many sources, (the program abt the moon was on the discovery channel) and you can't limit them to only 'grade appropriate' educational materials.
My husband and J made dessert together today, hey made whoopie pie, which is an Amish cake filled with marshmallow cream. She loves to bake with him, and is learning about measurements. Then of course she loves to eat what she has made,LoL.
