Our week

This past week we went to the AMNH museum with some homeschooling friends. The kids and I walked around for over 4 hours and saw some really interesting things. F especially liked to read all the captions, info. and other things about various animals and plants. He learned a lot and decided this is his favorite museum.

This is a 1500 year old tree piece. It is small because there were a few years here and there when it didn't grow right because of bad conditions.
There is so much to learn in the city, so many things to do and it's great that we can go at our own pace.

After school work Tuesday we went and bought some books from a discount store, I spent $18 on about 10 books on various animals and the planet. Then we walked to the library and borrowed all of the books we had on hold. We got home in time for the rain to start again.

Rain and more rain on Wednesday kept us home all day, but it was a productive school day. I asked F to do research on weird/different fruits or vegetables. So he picked the Durian fruit, and found a lot of interesting information.  Math was done with the IXL math program. Reading is done daily with various books, short stories, and other things.

Thursday the rain let up so after math and reading lessons we took a walk to Prospect Park and decided to do a nature walk to see how many animals we could spot.  It is so beautiful after a few days of rain, among the numerous animals in the park we saw red winged black birds, chipmunks, robins, turtles and ducks. We were hoping to see a bull frog like we did a few weeks ago, but none were to be found.
J read all of the various signs that were around the park and I took pictures of all the mushrooms that sprang up after all this rain.  I love all of the wonderful things this park offers for us.

Friday was the annual homeschool science fair. There were at least 40 children there, about 10 of whom presented their science experiments. The hands down favorite had to be the exploding volcano :). But there were many interesting exhibits, like the carnivorous venus fly trap and pitcher plant, how to form crystals, and battery acid that made flames. Next year J. and her bff F. decided to enter the fair as well.
F hung out with friends and had a good time.  Trader Joe's was the next stop, then we dropped J. off at her bff's house for a few hours of girly play date. :)  They had a great time painting their faces and just being silly.

Today is the girls' last dance class where they will show case all they have learned these last few months.  Then we will go to my mother's house and celebrate her b day :).
