Well I am trying to teach F fractions, he has the basics of it but a larger part of it is escaping him.... I didn't realize how little I know as well when it comes to fractions....I guess things I learned in the 4Th grade have not really stuck with me thru the years....
I searched a few web sites and refreshed myself enough so I can teach him what he needs to know for the 2ND grade.. It's amazing how much I learn just by teaching him. I really enjoy these things now that I am older and able to really appreciate how interesting learning new stuff really is. I've always loved to learn and to be in school but now I am learning the things that I should have or did and forgot, to learn in elementary and middle school. I loved college and wish I was in school again :).
I am also hearing about a 14 yo boy that my friend is helping out with school among other things. He is having such a hard time in school and a large part is that he really doesn't want to learn the things they are trying to teach him, and another part is that he feels stupid and is just not inspired to do his best. I feel bad for this boy and makes me glad that we have this opportunity to home school our kids and have them learn at their own pace and learn things that interest them. I can't picture having F do a report where writing was involved (his least favorite subject) and 'making' him do it because the teacher said so. He does write reports and he is occasionally upset over something that he really doesn't want to do but needs to learn...but for the most part he has choices on what he would like to do in any given day. For example: book reports, he gets to choose which book he'd like to write it on and he gets to choose the book he reads in the first place....it makes it more interesting and he is involved in his learning process.
Today, like I said, we did some fractions, went over the web sites I was looking at, then we read a little bit about the history of flight and he he watched a few interesting shows. I am still sick so we took it easy today...he got to play a little more than he would have :)
