Today I took the kids to the library for a puppet show given by the CP zoo people. The girls had a good time, J participated fully... jumping up and down, giving answers to questions about animal shapes, sounds and other things. F was bored (it was for pre -schoolers) I brought some school work for him to do, so he sat at the tables and did his grammar and math pages. Then we headed off to the playground that opened recently 1 block from the library, its actually pretty cool, the jungle gym is set up as a big boat, with periscopes and oars to climb..all fitting with the theme of Leaf Erickson park. It has a short history of his discovery of America back in the year 1000's. It was fun, the day was beautiful.
Friday we went for a drive to Princeton NJ for apple/pumpkin picking. It was a nice 1 1/2 drive except for the fact that we got lost, but it was such beautiful country that we were driving around in, none of us really minded. All in all it took us about 2 hours instead of the 1 1/2.
At the farm we got to see animals, climb farm equipment that was set up for children to pretend play on, there was a barn set up with a Johnny Appleseed theme. It had different sections from different parts of his life/travels. J was into all the things you can make from apples. A loved that they had animals (some were real, only stuffed) and she liked how Johnny Appleseed helped animals along his travels in the Midwest. The kids had such a good time, we then picked some pumpkins from the patch. F picked the biggest one. J picked the smallest one :)
J got to pet a dog that is owned by the farm and a big fat cat, which she loved.
Then we drove to the apple picking farm, it was separate from the main farm. The kids got to pick their own apples, we tried all of them. J ate about 4 apples, A and F about 3. We tried all different kinds of apples and decided that apples straight from the tree are sooooo much better than the ones from the store. :) Our favorite had to be the Golden delicious apples. We picked about 9 pounds of apples. While we walked the rows and rows of apples I took the opportunity to teach the kids about how apples grow, and how bees help them grow into apples. There were a lot of bees on the ground on the discarded apples and it was a great educational opportunity. We basically take every opportunity to teach the kids something.
We spent about 4 hours there, then drove to Walmart for some shopping. Then home to sleep. Saturday the girls had dance class then we did our food shopping. We have had a very looonng week and were done by Sunday... which I spent cleaning and helping F do his report for Finland. He is really into it and was eager to get started..... Love it!
We are doing long division for the next few weeks until F really has it down.
Tonight I took the opportunity to read to them about Johnny Appleseed from the American tall tales book we have here.
