Memorial day

We went to the memorial day parade here in Brooklyn with my mom, it was held at a park. The park has a 233 yr old cannon from the Revolutionary War and a big monument to the armed forces. the kids had a great time playing and checking out the cannon and the huge cannon balls, got a bunch of free flags and some spinning wheels from some boy scouts. There was a band and we saw a lot of veterans marching and high school bands. It was really nice.

I looked up the meaning of Memorial day and discussed it with the kids, how it is actually on May 30Th and not the 26Th (it was made officially the 26Th early in the 1900's to make it a 3 day weekend). The meaning behind it and all, makes me teary eyed. It is so sad and I think that we don't give the veterans enough credit for all they have done for us.

Today F wrote out his Japan report and did some 3 digit math in his book, we also went over some money math. He likes to do his 'who wants to win a million' game online. he asked me a question about negative numbers and i am happy to report that I knew the answer :) I was really afraid that I would not be able to help him with higher level math than 4 th grade without having to look it all up for myself. So far I have had a great recollection of a lot of things I was taught in elementary and some high school... so there was a point for me sitting thru 9Th grade algebra :).

I am actually liking math for a change...

We have also been watching a lot of educational shows on cable... and a lot of Indiana Jones as well... F loves it.

J and A did some p[ages in their respective work books.. J did the lower case alphabet from g to z and was so happy when she finished it, all correctly I might add :) A is learning her numbers.

I have also been reading at least 3 books nightly to them, Harold and the Purple crayon, Curious George and Olivia are favorites...
F and I also read at least 1 chapter of Moby Dick a night.

There is a Summer reading program at a local bank where if you read 10 books you get $10 to deposit into an existing or new acct at the bank. So we will be doing that over the summer as well as the Book store's summer reading program where you read 8 books and get 1 free book when you turn a book journal in by Sept.
We already read a lot of books so it's good to get something in return for it anyway.
