Zoo and BBQ

Last Friday we went to the Bronx zoo with my mother... it took us over 2 hours to get there(trip should have been only 1 hour) because of the traffic. Once we got there though we had a great time, the weather was perfect fro walking around the huge zoo. The kids loved seeing all the animals that you can't see any where else in NYC. The tigers, zebras, and gorillas were the favorite ones. We went into the gorilla habitat which was done to resemble the rain forest, it had water falls, mist, giant bugs, behind glass of course, an Okapi, and other fascinating creatures. The kids loved the exhibit where they could see all sorts of different insects and learn more about them. J was nervous about seeing the gorillas but once we went inside and she saw that they were behind glass and that they were not the giant ones she though about she loved it... the 3 babies were wrestling and chasing each other it was so cute.

We also saw camels and J remembered our story of the nomads who ride camels to move from place to place. The world of darkness was so cool as well, the bats and crocodiles were the favorites there. They also had a stinky rat :) and mice, basically things you see at night, skunks, roaches....

We have not been to this zoo in 2 years, I don't remember why we didn't go last year... we have been members of the WCS for over 4 years now and it really pays to be one. We go over what we pay for the membership every year with the amount of times we go to the 5 participating zoos.

This year we also went inside the butterfly garden and my J was disappointed because no butterflies landed on her, she even had her pink shirt with butterflies on it for that reason. My mom said that when she went a while back there were so much more butterflies inside and they actually landed on you... I felt bad for her because she really wanted that to happen to her. She got to touch a few of them and feel their wings, and she got to see a lot of them up close and see them getting the pollen from the flowers and drink(according to her) the nectar. It was cool to see them so close and be able to touch some of them. Afterwards we got to ride on the bug carousel which made her very happy :). F and his father found some real bamboo trees and had a blast touching it and getting a few leaves off as souvenirs. A was so cute, she got to see the red panda which has been missing fro the Prospect Park zoo the last few times we went. She also wanted to see the gorillas and the polar bear so she was happy, she was too excited to be scared of anything... my little girl is getting big.....

Saturday we went to SI for a BBQ at my BF's house with her 2 kids and one of her friend's and her 8 yo dd. The kids love being there and ate their fill of BBQ'd hot dogs and mac and cheese... played with the kids, ran around and celebrated Labor day.

It was nice to see her after all these months. We talked and realized that we hadn't seen each other since last Dec. for A's b day party... I think time flies by and you don't realize it. Especially when you have kids :)
They are only little for so long... I am blessed to be able to home school them and get to see them grow up and be a part of their every day experiences.
